It’s quite rare that we revisit a place or indeed go back to a hotel. Over the years we have a true love of these beautiful Indian Ocean islands and the magnificent Atmosphere Kanifushi Maldives in particular. Like many, we now suffer from an incurable condition – Maldives-itis which grasps its stranglehold of withdrawal symptoms when not having visited for a short while.

Atmosphere Kanifushi Maldives has a 2km stretch of powder white sand

We had only ever planned to travel ‘the once’ to the Maldives. Our first trip was abandoned as we were due to travel out on Boxing Day 2004 – the day of the catastrophic tsunami. We put plans on hold for a year or so and have now visited 13 times. After all of our visits, our favourite place remains Atmosphere Kanifushi Maldives.

This is a premium all-inclusive resort. But, do you know what? You get what you pay for and we’d rather spend a few more pounds and go every couple of years to Kanifushi than go to another island every year. It really does have a special place in our heart.

So what makes Atmosphere Kanifushi Maldives so special?

There’s the standard of accommodation, the food, choice of restaurants, service, overall atmosphere. It’s not one thing. For us, Kanifushi delivers the complete package – with a good dollop of rest and relaxation thrown in.

Getting there …

You reach Atmosphere Kanifushi Maldives by seaplane. It’s about a 35 minute flight. But, you get to access the resorts airport lounge whilst waiting for your seaplane (where you can get soft drinks and snacks). The 35 minute flight soon passes as you watch the wonder of the Indian Ocean below: the inhabited islands festooned with palm trees, the clear blue waters that range from deep blue to bright aqua and the expansive stretches of coral.

On arrival, you’ll be greeted with the sound of traditional Maldivian drummers who escort you along the deck to the island, where you can escape the heat and the sunshine in the reception area. After all of the travelling, you’ll be glad of the welcome drink – either a cool glass of bubbly or some coconut water. All of the necessary paperwork was completed whilst in the airport lounge, so you can just sit back and relax with your glass of cold. When you’re ready to head to your villa, a golf buggy will take you directly there. The island is 2km in length and the buggy’s run up and down the island all day and evening – you don’t have to walk too far if you don’t want to!

Adults or Families – who would enjoy a stay at Atmosphere Kanifushi Maldives?

It’s a great place for couples to relax, especially in the day at the dedicated adults-only pool. Equally, families are catered for really well and there’s also a kid’s club. Atmosphere Kanifushi is a large island so it never feels that busy.

Premium all-inclusive plan – what’s included

Rooms with a view – what are the villas and suites like at Atmosphere Kanifushi Maldives?

The standard of accommodation is fabulous. There’s a range of room categories – beach villas, beach villas with pools and the recently launched over-water villas and grand beach villas with large lap pools. Larger groups may prefer the new ‘Residences’ which are essentially two adjoined villas with a very large pool in the centre. They look rather smart.

The entry-level beach villas are some of the very best we’ve experienced in the Maldives. They’re really spacious with large comfy beds, separate indoor seating area and an outdoor deck with a couple of chairs and sun loungers.

The outdoor bathrooms have twin sinks (so there’s no arguing), a rainwater shower and a great big, deep bathtub! Oh, and don’t be alarmed if you get a visit from a fruit bat every now and again. And, as for the geckos, they just help to eat the mozzies!

All beach villas are just seconds away from powder white sand between your toes and the water villas have steps leading down to the crystal clear Indian Ocean.

It’s the little extras that make it special … facilities that you’ll find in the villa

What you’d expect …

  • Hairdryer (although it’s not overly powerful which is fine for someone like me with short hair).
  • Toiletries – shower gel, shampoo, conditioner – all in recyclable bottles
  • Lots of lovely fluffy white towels
  • Beach towels
  • Kettle, tea, coffee with lots of cups and glasses

As well as …

  • Beach shoes or flip flops (some parts of the beach have a little more coral than others so would recommend that you protect your feet)
  • Beach Bag
  • Mosquito Repellent – although as the island is ‘fogged’ each evening
  • SPF30 Suncream – a small, emergency pot
  • Fridge filled with beer, soft drinks, iced coffee, fruit juice that’s all included
  • Wine fridge – with a choice of red or white
  • Nespresso Machine
  • Snacks like crisps, biscuits (or chocolate) and nuts – replenished daily
  • Bottled water (but no plastic!)
  • A torch for the evening (although the island is fairly well lit)
  • An umbrella – in case of inclement weather
  • An extension lead if you’ve a myriad of machines you need to connect

Where to eat and drink at Atmosphere Kanifushi Maldives

Spice Restaurant: This is the main restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Majority is buffet style with some live-cooking stations.

Spice Restaurant

Pier Six: the newest restaurant on the island. Open for breakfast for water villa categories and also in the evening. This is a speciality restaurant and you can dine there if you have an allowance in the premium all-inclusive plan (based on number of room nights). Alternatively, you can dine at Pier Six any time but is chargeable.

Teppanyaki Grill: co-located within Pier Six, there are two sittings per evening. This is not part of the all-inclusive plan and is charged separately.

Sunset: this is a speciality restaurant, open in the evenings.

Ceylon Bliss: open 5 nights a week serving traditional Sri-Lankan food. Served thali- style (on one plate). Located in the centre of the island, a quirky restaurant with furniture predominantly made from wooden tree trunks and the like!

Themed Evenings: Every Sunday, there is an Indian Ocean Evening which (weather permitting) is held outside. An impressive array of cuisine from across the Indian Ocean incorporating traditional Maldivian dishes as well as Indian and Sri Lankan cuisine.
